3The history of the Department of Health Sciences, School of Medicine, Kyushu Universitybegan in 1903, when the nursing program was founded in Kyoto Imperial University FukuokaMedical School. In 2002, Kyushu University reorganized the three-year School of HealthSciences to the current Department of Health Sciences, School of Medicine with 3 programs:Nursing, Radiological Sciences, and Medical Technology. For over 100 years, many outstandingmedical practitioners have graduated from our school and contributed greatly to their fieldand have left their mark on society. In addition, this department continues to foster excellenteducation in students while promoting research in the field of health sciences through thegraduate school. A Master’s program was established in 2007 and then a Doctoral programwas established in 2009. Also, for international students, a course in Asian Health Scienceswas established in the Master’s program in 2011, and an international doctoral program wasestablished in 2013.The study of Health Sciences covers broad areas of health support, such as recovery fromdiseases and disorders, prevention and early detection of diseases, maintenance of goodhealth, and improvement in the quality of life. The education goal at our graduate school is toenable people to become active both nationally and internationally as researchers and educators.They will be capable of carrying out creative and advanced research as well as beingleaders of organizations in the practical healthcare field.
